Are unusual jobs on the increase?

When looking for a job, it is important to keep your options open.  Searching for ‘traditional’ jobs will pose a lot of competition.  The serious job hunter looks for the more unusual occupations where there is less competition.

Badger consultants, dog psychologists and vibration consultants are just three of the unusual job titles that have become more commonplace today.

According to Hiscox, there has been a steady rise in the number of non-traditional businesses looking for insurance policies to cover their unusual businesses. Alternative jobs on the increase include:

  • Badger consultants: advising people how to keep within the laws protecting the nocturnal animals;

  • Dog psychologists: analysing the behaviours and characteristics of troublesome pups;

  • Feng Shui consultants: visiting offices and homes to ensure a harmonious environment;

  • Home economists: the ‘behind the scene’ chefs who prepare the kitchen for celebrity chef programmes;

  • Embalmers: it seems gold isn’t just for the pharaohs, as more embalmers have appeared on Hiscox’s books;

  • Kosher certification consultants: whilst unlikely to be Michael from the Apprentice, others are setting up business to advise on whether food is prepared in accordance with Jewish law;

  • Vibration consultants: nothing risqué! These are people who advise on – and correct – vibration and noise problems for construction companies or manufacturers;

  • Painting authenticators: the teams who see through art fraudsters to differentiate between true versus fake paintings;

  • Saddle consultants: for equine lovers who want to ensure they’re having the most comfortable ride possible and that their horses have the perfect riding accessory.

Are you a friendly witch?

Wookey Hole are now looking for another witch!

If you have ever been to Somerset, you may have heard of the legend of the Wookey Hole Witch. If not, here is the story:

The Witch of Wookey Hole is a stalagmite in the first chamber of the caves and the central character in an old English legend. The story has several different versions with the same basic features:
A man from Glastonbury is betrothed to a girl from Wookey. A witch living in Wookey Hole Caves curses the romance so that it fails.

The man, now a monk, seeks revenge on this witch who—having been jilted herself—frequently spoils budding relationships. The monk stalks the witch into the cave and she hides in dark corner near one of the underground rivers. The monk blesses the water and splashes some of it at the dark parts of the cave.

Catching the witch off guard, the monk splashes the water at the dark corner she is hiding in. The blessed water immediately petrifies the witch, and she remains in the cave to this day.
